Hurricane Season Exterior Cleaning: Before and After the Storm
Short answer: before hurricane season (June 1 to November 30), clear your gutters and downspouts so heavy rain can drain. After a storm, put safety first, photograph any damage for insurance before cleaning, then rinse mud, debris and salt film from walls, lanais, pool cages and driveways with low pressure.

When Is Hurricane Season in Cape Coral?
Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30. Cape Coral still remembers Hurricane Ian in 2022, and every season brings a chance of tropical storms with heavy rain, storm surge and wind-blown debris.
What Exterior Cleaning Should You Do Before Hurricane Season?
Before hurricane season, focus on anything that helps water drain and anything that could become debris. Late spring, before the rainy season starts in late May, is a good time.
- Clean gutters and downspouts so heavy rain runs off the roof instead of overflowing (see Gutter Cleaning)
- Clear pool deck and lanai drains so water doesn’t pool
- Check the pool cage and point out any loose or torn screens to a screen contractor
- Clean the roof if it’s heavily streaked, so you can see its condition clearly
- Put away loose items like furniture cushions, pots and decorations
What Should You Do First After a Storm?
After a storm, safety comes before cleaning. Stay away from downed power lines and standing water near electrical equipment, and don’t climb on the roof.
- Check for hazards such as downed lines, structural damage or broken glass
- Photograph everything before cleaning, for your insurance claim
- Contact your insurer about any damage before repairs
- Only then clean surfaces that aren’t damaged
How Do You Clean a House After a Hurricane?
You clean a house after a hurricane with low pressure and plenty of rinsing. Storms leave mud splash, salt film, leaves and debris on walls, screens, lanais and driveways, and the damp weather that follows can bring fast mildew growth.
- Walls and screens: soft wash to remove mud and salt film without stressing storm-weakened paint or screens
- Driveways and walkways: clear debris, then pressure clean the concrete
- Lanais and pool decks: rinse mud and leaves, and clear deck drains
- Gutters: clear storm debris so the next rain can drain
Don’t pressure wash areas with storm damage, like cracked stucco, loose tiles or torn screens. Have those repaired first.
